Compost Pile

Our first real home project was finally setting up a compost pile. Composting is something I've wanted to do for a few years, but living in an apartment without any patio or outside area made this very difficult. We have recently relocated to the suburbs and now, having some backyard space at our disposal (no pun intended!) we made a very simple composting structure.

Supplies Needed:
~ Galvanized metal screen (3'x5') - this is available pre-cut at most home improvement stores. It's smaller than chicken wire, but that would work too!
~ Wire cutters
~ Wire
~ A piece of plywood to cover the compost area (and keep animals out)

We flattened out our piece of metal screen as best we could (it had been pretty tightly wound) and folded it into fourths, then attached the two open sides with wire. We set it up on the side of the house, covered with plywood, and now have a place to dump our organic waste! An open bottom is good to encourage worms and other of natures little decomposition helpers to work their way up into the compost.

We also got a stainless steal container with a sealed lid to keep our kitchen scraps in so we don't have to walk out to the pile every single time we prepare food.
